Introducing the Soliloquy Crop Addon

by Thomas Griffin on January 30, 2013 | Reader Disclosure

I get lots of requests for enhancements to Soliloquy, and one of the requests I get more frequently is the ability to crop images that have been uploaded so that all of the images in the slider are the same size.

Before today, you had the ability to do that “somewhat” using WordPress-registered image sizes. The problem with this is that if you wanted to add a new size, you needed to add code into your theme somewhere to register the new size. This is not ideal, so I set out to create an Addon that would allow you to specify your slider dimensions and create new image sizes from those dimensions on the fly.

Enter the Crop Addon!

The Crop Addon takes all the hassle out of resizing your images for you. Instead of resizing everything in Photoshop (or maybe not even resizing at all), you can now utilize the Crop Addon to make sure all of the images in your slider are the same size. It’s a piece of cake to do:

  1. Select the “cropped” size from the Slider Default Size dropdown menu.
  2. Enter in your slider dimensions into the field. All images will be cropped to this size.
  3. If you want to change the crop alignment position (it defaults to the center of the image), find the “Soliloquy Crop Settings” metabox and select a crop alignment position from the dropdown. Some of the options available are “Center”, “Top Left”, “Bottom Right” amongst others.

And that’s it! Save your slider, and your images will now be serve at the size you specified on the fly – no coding required!

Remember, Addons are only available to developer license holders, so if you already own a single license, you can upgrade from right inside your Member’s Area dashboard.

Hope you enjoy the new Addon. Next up on the list: White Label. 😉

My images seem to be broken when I choose the “crop” option. I have some weird image sizes that I need to deal with otherwise, but the slider shows broken image links when using ‘crop’, as opposed to the other options (ie. default, custom) where they at least show up.

Has anyone experienced this? Found a fix?

Are we able to add a property to the shortcode and designate the crop position on a slider by slider basis?
